How do law enforcement find marijuana from helicopters and planes?

I live in a heavily forested and agricultural area. Every now and then a state bureau of investigation helicopter or low-flying small plane will catch someone growing marijuana. Be it a field or a small patch, how do they distinguish marijuana from a heavily green forest or garden? Do they use special scopes or filters? How do they do it? Just curious (not a smoker and can’t grow a thing!)

Marijuana gives off a higher temperature than normal plants. It is very easy to spot from a plane or helicopter using infrared cameras. It does not matter how much cover is over them they will glow like a flare on a dark night to these cameras and it does not matter if it is detected during day or night the outcome is the same. They can be picked up via satellite imagining also. The same technology the National Parks people use for detecting fires. If your growing some you can expect to have a police or FBI helicopter hoovering overhead very soon.
