How does ph affect seed germination

How does acidity affect plant growth and germination?

1) pH will affect the activity of all the enzymes in the plant. Some will stop functioning before others as the pH is changed.

2) pH affects the availability of plant nutrients when a plant is growing in soil.

3) At the extremes, acid or alkali are just too corrosive to enable survival.

If you are looking for a suitable experiment to do, we suggest you use the technique outlined in our Worksheet number 5 which could be carried out at a range of different pHs. We suggest you change the pH by adding different amounts of acid (eg HCl) or alkali (eg NH4OH) to the water in the bottom of the half-bottle boats.
