Cannabis Caviar – Everything you need to know & more!
What is Cannabis Caviar?
Marijuana buds are some of the most versatile treats known to humankind, so its no surprise that we have found a way to turn the resin glands of a precious marijuana bud into something from the heavens – moon rocks, or, marijuana caviar. Whatever extravagant name you call them by, you’re going to want to try this caviar marijuana asap!

Cannabis Caviar, or Caviar Gold strain, Caviar Concentrates, Caviar Weed, Marijuana Caviar, Caviar Moon rocks, are basically the same thing as moon rocks. These are all names for the same concept of very high-quality marijuana buds that have been dipped in hash oil and then rolled in a layer of kief. Moon rocks are exceedingly potent with some Cannabis Caviar ‘strains’ containing up to 91% THC. This is due to the extremely high quality of strains often used in the ingredients, as well as the incredible potency of kief and cannabis oil. This extravagant combination makes for one hell of a high. There are many top-shelf weed strains which may be chosen to be made into Cannabis Caviar, but the most common are:
- KGB strain
- Mochi Strain
- THC Diamonds
- Platinum weed
- God Bud strain
- Grapefruit weed
- Black Diamond cannabis
- Glue tap strain
Caviar marijuana is mainly sold by dispensaries in North America, although you can definitely find coffee shops abroad that may sell them. Caviar Buds are almost always high quality and extremely strong. When I say strong, I mean knock you on your butt strong – or, some might say they’ll send you to the moon you get so high, thus the name moon rocks. So if you are a new cannabis user, be cautious when smoking marijuana caviar.

These are also known as pure cannabis cigars, torpedo weed, or tarantula cones. These are basically blunted (or what Americans would call joints) of pure, high-quality marijuana-infused with a hash oil concentrate and then rolled in kief. This slightly strange process makes for an exceptionally potent high, but not for the best smoking. Another name for these is Moon Sticks, as they’re basically mooning rocks but in blunt format.

What is a moon rock?
Beautiful moonrock ready for smoking. Photo: @iron.lotus.buds
A moonrock and Cannabis caviar are actually the same things, simply with different names. Some people call them Cannabis Caviar, some people call them moon rocks – caviar marijuana, marijuana caviar – tomato, tomatoe. However, some people argue that moon rocks always have the extra layer of kief at the end of the process, and cannabis caviar does not. This very small difference is probably the only way to distinguish the two products. Confused yet? Us too. The concentration of THC in moon rocks is typically 51%. This was an extremely high level and unheard of when they first arrived on the market. Then Sun rocks showed up on the scene.
What are Sunrocks?
Definitely a step up from your average fish eggs, you’re going to need more than a medical marijuana card to get your hands on this truly potent caviar marijuana.

Sunrocks are a more recent and improved adaptation of Cannabis Caviar or Moon rocks. Sunrocks take cannabis to an entirely new level in THC levels and potency. They have essentially upgraded moon rocks, using only OG top shelf strains and with THC concentration levels reaching up to 90%. Sunrocks are covered in a thick coat of high-grade extraction concentrates and lightly dusted in pure kief. Due to this light kief covering, you can often see the actual marijuana bud underneath, unlike moon rocks, which are often covered in a thick coat of kief.
To make sunrocks simply follow these steps:
- Make sure you have the highest quality OG cannabis ingredients
- Next, you want to saturate it with a strong cannabis oil concentrate, like BHO or Co2. E nsure that they are pure and have been through a vacuum oven.
- Once all the contaminants are removed, cover the OG buds in a thin layer of BHO. You shouldn’t really be able to see the BHO on the buds.
- Cover the entire bud in a light dusting of high-quality Kief.
- And voila! You have your own homemade marijuana caviar sunrocks.
If you’re toking gourmet cannabis topped with caviar, you’re going to want to enjoy every puff.

Sunrocks vs. Moon Rocks vs Cannabis Caviar – Which are the strongest?
This is a very common question surrounding these products. Which is the strongest? Well, sunrocks are definitely considered to be the creme de le creme of these three products. After that, it would almost certainly be moon rocks, as they’re always covered in kief. Finally, you would have cannabis caviar. Now, obviously, this is completely and utterly dependent on the process used to create each product. In regards to potency, it generally goes in this order of strongest to least strong: Sunrocks > Moonrocks > Cannabis Caviar.
Prices of Caviar Gold, Moonrocks & Sunrocks
As you might expect, all three of these products can be quite expensive. That is because they take top-shelf weed (already very expensive) and then dip it in hash oil or cover it in Butane Hash Oil (BHO). Both hash oil and BHO, in general, are considered to be relatively expensive. Finally, they are rolled in kief, which is also an incredibly expensive part of the weed. These kief balls, as they could be known, are at least $40 a pop. They’re probably going to cost more than this, depending on where you are in the world. However, the average THC levels in regular flower marijuana are nothing when compared to the average THC levels of these caviar nuggets, meaning these little fish eggs are well worth their price tags.
Why is cannabis caviar sometimes called Caviar OG?
This is related to the fact that companies will normally use OG strains as their starting bud when creating marijuana caviar. If you use OG strains, then you will almost always call a final product something with OG in the title. The OG is a nod to the master strain and is a sure sign of both qualities, as well as potency. Cannabis Caviar, sometimes known as Caviar OG, is particularly popular in places like Colorado and California.
It is important to also be aware that there is a strain called Caviar OG as well, which some people may get confused with the concept of cannabis caviar. It’s still a great strain, so don’t be too disappointed if you get confused, but it’s not proper marijuana caviar. Guess you just have to enjoy what you have and be a little more precise next time you buy! There are worse problems to have if you ask us.
If you prefer to smoke your caviar marijuana as a concentrate then you’ll need an excellent dab rig to help you do that.
We love the Tee-Pee Mini Rig from Cloud Cover! It’s cute, well priced, and is easy to dab from.
Imagine the stock picture of this cute lil’ rig stacked about 5x – then you’ve got just about the height of the real thing!

How to smoke Cannabis Caviar, Moonrocks, and Sunrocks?
Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your marijuana caviar smoking experience.
When you’re paying such a ridiculous price for something, you’re going to want to ensure that you’re getting the best possible smoking experience out of it. For example, you’re missing out on a large percentage of the potency if you don’t manage to get all of the kief on a moon rock. These products can also have the tendency to be a little sticky, making the smoking process even trickier. You obviously don’t want to waste any of the THC magic that surrounds your little marijuana space rocks. The best way to smoke cannabis caviar, moonrocks, and sunrocks is as follows:
- Get a flat, smooth, hard surface
- Place your moon rocks, sunrocks, or cannabis caviar onto the surface
- Cut it into small pieces with a sharp knife or tool
- Cannabis Caviar, Moonrocks and Sunrocks typically have a greasy texture making them harder to light or keep a cherry. However, if you sprinkle your cut pieces on top of some flower, it should smoke better and be much easier to light.
- You can alternatively roll up your Caviar/Moonrocks/Sunrocks into a blunt or joint by grinding up flower buds with a high-quality grinder and sprinkling the small cut pieces on top
- Be aware that caviar wax is incredibly potent and may result in an extremely powerful high or even knock you out completely.
- With this in mind, sit back, light it up, and enjoy the bliss ride.
What happens if you soak your weed in E-liquid?
Cannabis E-Liquids. Photo: @foolishmf
Cannabis is not water-soluble. As such, you need certain liquids which are soluble for Cannabis in order to get high from vaping. E-liquids are an infusion of herb or concentrate mixed and heated with propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and/or high-proof alcohol. However, you would need to decarboxylate your weed before soaking, in order to convert the THCA into activated THC. If you skip this important step then you will be smoking inactive THC (THCA) and will not achieve a marijuana high. There are companies in California that sell THC-infused E-liquids, which is a much easier solution to creating these E-liquids yourself.
While this process will not result in marijuana caviar of any type, it’s still a great way to create a potent high.
What is Cannabis Caviar?
Whether you’re buying Sunnrocks, Moonrocks, or Cannabis Caviar, they are all basically the same thing: marijuana dipped in hash oil and then rolled in kief. They differ mostly in the quality of ingredients and THC concentration levels, but in general, the terms are almost interchangeable. These innovative, modern, and extremely powerful cannabis creations have enhanced the marijuana market and have created the potential to reach an entirely new level of high for cannabis users.
- Moonrocks, sunrocks, and cannabis caviar are all basically the same
- They are top-shelf or OG buds dipped in hash oil and rolled in kief
- Hard to smoke, but smoke best in a bong or bowl, sprinkled in small cut up pieces on top of the flower
- Not recommended for newer marijuana users
- Can have up to 90% THC potency
- Very potent, but also extremely flavorful with wonderful aromas

Moon Rock Weed: What It Is And How To Make It
If you’ve been asking yourself, “What will marijuana-product producers think of next?”, the answer is moon rock weed. But as popular as this product is becoming, there is still some confusion as to exactly what a moon rock is and how to make one.
We’re here to clear up all the misinformation. This article will show you what moon rock weed is and how to make it.
What Moon Rock Weed Is Not
Moon rock weed—often just referred to as moon rock—is regularly confused with 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). Yeah, I know. I can’t pronounce that word either. Thankfully, MDMA is more commonly known as ecstasy, so we’ll just call it that from now on.
Though ecstasy produces psychoactive effects like marijuana, the two are vastly different. Ecstasy is a methamphetamine that acts through the serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine receptors in the brain. And because ecstasy is a stimulant in the amphetamine class, it can be addictive.
Marijuana, on the other hand, acts through the cannabinoid receptors in the brain and is, for all intents and purposes, non-addictive. It’s often good to say, “moon rock weed” or “moon rock marijuana” in conversation just so everyone knows exactly what you’re talking about. Wouldn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea.
What Moon Rock Weed Is
Another misconception about moon rock weed is that it is a special strain of marijuana bred for its THC concentration. This is false. Moon rock weed is the triple combination of the following cannabis products:
- Raw, whole bud
- Honey oil (a.k.a. hash oil)
Essentially, moon rock weed, or cannabis caviar, is a small pinch of your favorite bud covered in honey oil with a generous dusting of kief on top. The finished product looks very much like a nugget of green candy or, for those more healthfully-inclined, a Brussels sprout.
Because moon rock weed is made using three distinct forms of cannabis, each with their own degrees of potency, many are calling moon rock the strongest cannabis in the world and categorize it as the best high on Earth. But is moon rock weed really as potent as all that?
How Potent Is Moon Rock Weed?
We’re not going to kid you, moon rock weed is pretty potent…or at least it can be if you choose the right ingredients. It starts, of course, with the type of bud you use. You can choose a high-THC strain like Bruce Banner (29% THC) or you can choose a low-THC strain like Maui Wowi (13% THC). That will have a significant effect on the potency of your moon rock weed.
In addition, the potency of the honey oil you use along with the potency of the kief you use will have a profound effect on the THC percentage of the finished moon rock. On average, a typical moon rock offers 50% THC, but that already-high percentage can be pushed to almost triple digits with the right combination of ingredients.
But potency is not the end-all, be-all of moon rock weed’s appeal. Sure, it’s a big part, but the wide variety of effects this form of cannabis offers is more often the major draw. Moon rock weed can have varying effects, and varying degrees of effect, depending on a number of factors.
Chief amongst those factors is the strain used. But almost equally important is the terpene and cannabinoid concentrations present in the bud, honey oil, and kief.
Another major factor is the nigh-unmeasurable synergy between the three ingredients. Synergy is the interaction between the bud, honey oil, and kief that produces effects beyond what you could get if you took the products separately. It can be very difficult, even with a degree in chemistry, to figure out the synergistic effects you might get when you mix bud, honey oil, and kief so you’re best bet is just to try different combinations.
The effects can be further tweaked by including CBD products (bud, oil, or kief) in the mix instead of just THC products. So rather than just flying as high as possible (with high-THC moon rocks), you can achieve medicinal effects including reduced nausea, anti-anxiety, suppressed seizures, and many more. All that is possible with just a bit of CBD.
Let’s investigate the effects of moon rock weed in a bit more detail in the next section.
What Can You Expect From Your Moon Rock Weed?
As we mentioned in the section above, this all depends on the ingredients used to make the moon rock. Because there are three different variables (bud, oil, and kief) and because each of these can vary amongst themselves, there’s really no way to describe every single option.
Instead, we’ve reduced it all down to two main categories: THC and CBD. These cannabinoids offer different effects and benefits. So once you understand what they do, you can begin to tweak the mixture of your moon rock weed to get it exactly the way you want it. We’ll start with THC.
THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol if you want to be precise, is the stuff of legend that will get you seriously messed up (high) in no time flat. That’s THC’s main claim to fame. So if you don’t want to trip the light fantastic, don’t include THC (bud, oil, or kief) in your moon rock weed.
That said, THC does offer some unique medicinal effects that you shouldn’t overlook. The medical benefits of THC include:
- Pain relief
- Eased nausea and vomiting
- PTSD treatment
- Insomnia prevention
- Increased appetite
- Enhanced senses
- Destruction of free radicals (antioxidant)
- Reduced inflammation
- Relaxed muscles
- Stopped convulsions
That’s a lot of medicinal benefits from a cannabinoid that most people think of as a recreational tool.
CBD (full name cannabidiol) is the true medicinal powerhouse of the bunch. On top of that, it won’t cause any psychoactive side-effects. So you can take CBD products without worrying that you’ll get high and lose half your day.
CBD has a long list of medicinal benefits, including:
- Bone growth
- Inhibited growth in cancer cells
- Slowed bacterial growth
- Reduced risk of artery blockage
- Psoriasis treatment
- Prevention of nervous system degeneration
- Reduced blood sugar levels
- Better sleep
- Reduced seizures and convulsions
- Suppressed muscle spasms
- Anxiety relief
- Lessened severity of psychosis
- Reduced nausea and vomiting
- Appetite stimulation
- Reduced inflammation
- Decreased pain
And that’s just for starters! Scientists continue to discover new ways to use CBD to treat both common and uncommon diseases.
If it’s your goal to make your own moon rock weed (which we’ll discuss in the next section), you can mix and match how much THC and CBD you include in the final product.
If you want straight-up “take me to another dimension,” opt for high-THC moon rock weed. If you want the medicinal effects without losing your grip on reality, make your moon rock weed with CBD bud, oil, and kief.
Should You Make Your Own Moon Rock Weed Or Buy Already-Made?
We’ll show you how to make your own moon rock weed from start to finish below, but keep in mind that it requires three distinct ingredients. When deciding whether to make your own moon rock weed, you basically have four choices:
- Produce all the ingredients at home (assuming you can grow your own bud).
- Purchase whole bud and then make your own honey oil and kief.
- Purchase whole bud, honey oil, and kief from your local dispensary.
- Buy already-made moon rock weed from a trusted source.
It really depends on how much work you want to put into it and how much time you have to dedicate to the process. To help you answer the make-or-buy question, let’s break down the moon rock creation process from start to finish.
Grow Your Own Bud
Growing your own bud is a labor-intensive, time-consuming process. It requires a great deal of knowledge, experience, and specialized equipment to get the final product just right. Most people don’t have the time or the money necessary to really make a go of growing their own bud. We’re not saying it can’t be done, but it’s often better just to purchase your cannabis from someone who does it full time.
Make Your Own Honey Oil
Honey oil, or hash oil, is typically made through a process known as solvent extraction. In solvent extraction, a chemical solvent like alcohol, carbon dioxide, or butane is forced through the cannabis material. In the process, trichomes and other chemicals are stripped away from the plant. The solvent is then removed by evaporation or straining, leaving the THC, CBD, terpenes, flavonoids, and other goodies behind.
Butane is by far the most popular solvent used to make honey oil. It’s so popular that we often refer to the finished product as butane hash oil (BHO) to distinguish it from other extraction methods (like ice water extraction).
The problem with making your own honey oil is that the process can be dangerous. Butane is highly flammable and misusing it can result in serious injury or death. Overall, it’s just a better idea to let those with plenty of experience make the honey oil for you.
Make Your Own Kief
Kief, also called crystal or pollen, is a fine powder made from the trichomes (dried resin glands) found on the leaves of the cannabis plant. Kief is fairly easy to produce. It’s certainly easier than growing your own bud or making your own honey oil. All you need to collect your own kief is a grinder with a kief catcher at the bottom.
Simply place your buds in the topmost chamber and begin to grind. The chopped bud falls into the next screen down. The loose kief continues to fall through this screen to the next compartment where it can be stored. Some even put a small coin in the herb collection chamber where it can be used as an agitator to further separate the kief from the ground bud.
After you’ve finished grinding, be sure to tap the grinder against a flat surface (like the table) to force the last of the loose kief through the screen into the final compartment.
As you can see, producing the three components that go into making moon rock weed can be a bit labor intensive. Your best bet is to purchase the already-made product at your local dispensary and just enjoy the effects.
If you want a bit more control over what you consume, we suggest buying the three components from a trusted source and then cooking up your own batch of moon rock weed.
How To Make Moon Rock Weed
The process for making moon rock weed is really quite simple. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Your favorite whole bud
- Honey oil
- Eyedropper or small brush
First, break off a small piece of bud from the larger whole. Holding this piece and manipulating it with the tweezers makes the whole process easier. Next, cover the piece of bud with honey oil using the eyedropper or small brush. Make sure you cover the whole piece of bud but don’t saturate it. Finally, roll the oil-covered bud in kief until it’s completely coated.
Repeat this process with all your bud, honey oil, and kief. Let the nuggets dry thoroughly before using. That’s it. Just three simple steps to making a completely new cannabis experience. And when you think about it, the combinations you can create are literally endless.
But how do you use moon rock weed once the nuggets are all dry? We’ll answer that question in the next section.
Discover the truth about moon rock weed, learn what goes into making it, and find out if producing your own moon rock weed is a good choice.
