What causes the smell of cannabis plants?

Cannabis plants smell particularly strong during the flowering period when buds are developed. However, the cause of the smell is not in the development of Cannabinoids. These are virtually odorless. The odor is spread by terpenes and terpenoids.

Weed without smell?

The aromatic is known for most cannabis plants. It is therefore important to initially choose a low odor weed strain by choosing one of our low smell cannabis seeds. This doesn’t mean you have to opt for a less strong type of cannabis. Luckily there are several low odor potent strains.

As said, all cannabis plants smell, but it is possible to minimize the smell and in some cases even remove it.

How to mask the smell?

On remote locations, there is no worry about the smell of your plant. However, this does not apply in an urban area. Even with one or two low odor plants the smell has to be taken into account. Do not think too easily about this because in the end prevention is better than cure.

Probably investing in a solid carbon filter is the best and most obvious option. However, there are even more precautions that can be taken. See the explanation of the different methods below:

  • Carbon filter
  • Negative ion generators
  • Hepa-filters
Tip 1: The use of a carbon filter

When it comes to air filtration, a decent carbon filter is often the first choice for indoor usage. Also when a low smell cannabis strain is chosen. The following applies: the more expensive the better, cheap carbon filters will last less longer and eventually might be break down. Each carbon filter also has a certain life span and can absorb a maximum amount. A high quality carbon filter will last a long time and is more reliable.

Such a carbon filter is also called a carbon scrubber and is attached at the end of the ventilation system. The activated carbon is capable of absorbing and binding the molecules in the air that cause the odor. The charcoal filter ensures the neutralization of all odors that go through it (if it’s connected properly without leakages).

However, a carbon filter is only effective when it’s combined with a ventilation system. The ventilation system has to push all the air through the charcoal filter. A ventilation system in combination with a carbon filter often takes quite a lot of space.

Extra tip: do not place the filter system in the direction of your neighbors and place a pot Ona-gel in front of the filter system.

Tip 2: The use of a negative ion generator

In addition to the low odor weed plants and a carbon filter, it is advisable to install a negative ion generator (air ionizer). Such a negative ion generator provides other air molecules, such as those of weed, an electric charge which will neutralize the odor. Moreover, there is no need to connect this device to a ventilation system.

Although a negative ion generator is less reliable than a carbon filter, this can be a good solution instead of using a carbon filter in case of low-smelling weed strains.

Extra tip: A negative ion generator will remove the odor, but slightly too fanatical, which also reduces aroma and taste quality of your weed. There are not to be placed in the same room as the plants.

Tip 3: Using a HEPA-filter

Finally, in addition to low odor marijuana strains, a carbon filter and a negative ion generator, there is a HEPA filter. A HEPA filter with activated charcoal not only filters odor molecules but also filters dust, allergens and other pollutants.

HEPA filters do not affect the taste or aroma of the plant. It is therefore no problem to install such a filter in the same room as the plants. In addition, most HEPA filters include a built-in ventilation system through which the air is pushed. However, keep in mind that a HEPA filter will not completely remove the odor. This filter is therefore especially good as an addition to your other measures.

How to mask the smell in an outdoor cultivation?

Outdoors, it is more difficult to mask the smell than in an indoor culture. The open air makes it virtually impossible to control the smell. Moreover, filtering is not possible. Yet there are several things you can do to mask the odor.

Tip 1: Choose low odor marijuana seeds

Perhaps this is the most important and obvious tip. For a low odor marijuana plant you will have to opt for a low odor seeds. On this page you will find various low-smelling varieties, but the best low smell cannabis strain is probably the Northern Lights. Moreover, the Northern Lights is a small strain which makes it easier to mask.

Extra tip: if you are looking for low odor outdoor strain, never choose a Skunk, Cheese or Kush. These types will create extreme fragrances.

Tip 2: Surpass the smell of cannabis

In addition to low odor outdoor cannabis strains in our range, masking the odor by surpassing it with other scents. Lavender is very suitable for this. In addition, lavender keeps insects and mice at a distance. However, mint, lemongrass and rosemary as companion plants are also a good option.

Tip 3: Choose a short flowering type of cannabis

During the vegetative phase, weed plants hardly develop aromas. However, when the plant starts to bloom the aromas will be released fast. Therefore it’s recommended to choose a low smelling autoflower strain with a short flowering period. The less long your plant blooms, the less likely it will stand out.

Why Do Most Weed Strains Stink But Others Don’t?

The characteristic smell of marijuana is due to its terpenes. Some weed strains produce more of them, while others produce less. These organic molecules aren’t related to THC, meaning they don’t make you high, but strangely enough, they do modify the effects of marijuana; easing paranoia, for example, or enhancing euphoria, or making you either clear-headed or more stoned. So, while you’re probably right in choosing your bud by its smell, this doesn’t mean that weed without a strong smell has effects that are weak or bland. The main thing is the cannabinoid profile of a strain, so low-odor cannabis can still be very potent, and its high rich and nuanced.

Does Low-Odor Mean No Smell At All?

To be honest, completely scentless marijuana doesn’t exist. However, some varieties produce very low levels of terpenes, especially during vegetative growth, so you can keep a small plant or two in a grow tent or even on your windowsill with no one being the wiser. When the flowering stage begins, the smell of these ‘odorless’ weed varieties can gradually get stronger or can come and go in waves. However, this is nothing that can’t be remedied simply by airing out the room or using some household deodorants. The aroma is also weak enough to be mistaken by a casual visitor for something innocuous like houseplants, flowers, fruit, or some other kitchen smells.

What Type Of Grower Can Benefit From Low-Odor Strains?

Of course, the main reason to breed low-odor marijuana strains is that they allow for discreet cultivation, be it indoors, outdoors or in a greenhouse. By choosing weed that doesn’t smell, amateurs and beginners can get away with growing one single medium-sized plant at home without using a carbon air-scrubber. Alternatively, you can grow several such plants in your garden, even right next to the fence separating you from your neighbors. The same goes for growing guerilla-style – your cannabis plot will be less conspicuous if it’s hidden behind other vegetation and doesn’t smell. In larger grows, with dozens or even hundreds of plants, using low-odor weed strains greatly enhances your odor control measures, allowing cultivators to lessen public nuisance or avoid detection entirely.
