OG-9 homing spider droids on Felucia

A menacing, [7] tank-like, [8] and gigantic walker [1] utilized by the Commerce Guild and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, [7] the OG-9 homing spider droid was the heavy tank variety of spider droid, while the DSD1 dwarf spider droid was an antipersonnel variety. [8] Both were manufactured by Baktoid Armor Workshop, and the homing spider droid consisted of a spherical body suspended between four mechanical legs. A powerful reactor was at the heart of the central body, [1] and this center armored reactor core also contained a red photoreceptor optical array and two comlink antennae. [7]

The OG-9 homing spider droid, or referred to simply as the spider droid, [8] moved slowly [1] on its long mechanical legs. [4] The legs contained heavy-duty joints, were armored to hide the inner hydraulics, and could straighten to raise the core. On the bottom of each leg was an all-terrain footpad, and at the top were the leg-piston drivers. [7]

Homing spider droids could fire from a top-mounted laser emplacement.

This battle droid [2] also contained long legs that maintained an imposing mix of speed and destructive power; the droid was armed with dish-shaped laser cannons [4] in the form of a top-mounted [1] long-range [7] laser emplacement [1] for attack. This laser cannon targeted for deflector shields [7] to release sustained-fire shots to quickly wear down a shield. The homing spider droid also possessed a bottom-mounted [1] short-range [7] laser cannon [1] for defense against ground attacks. This rotating laser targeted infantry [7] to keep them at bay. [1]

History [ edit | edit source ]

Before the Clone Wars to the Battle of Geonosis [ edit | edit source ]

Before the Clone Wars, the Commerce Guild, which comprised several notable corporations in the galaxy, used the OG-9 homing spider droid for contract enforcement [7] and against its adversaries such as delinquent creditors. [8] However, shortly before the start of the Clone Wars, the Commence Guild joined the Confederacy of Independent Systems, and the homing spider droid became part their Droid Army, which included the battle droids of groups like the Guild, Trade Federation, and Techno Union. [6]

Homing spider droids saw use in the Battle of Geonosis, and the droids would continue to be used by the Separatist Alliance.

Not long after the Commerce Guild joined the Separatists, the first battle of the Clone Wars, the First Battle of Geonosis, began. [7] 7,500 homing spider droids [9] were used to devastating effect by Separatist forces. [4] During the battle, the tank-like spider droids of the Separatists brought up the rear of the droid forces when combating ground forces of the Grand Army of the Republic. [8] Homing spider droids attacked All Terrain Tactical Enforcers and clone trooper formations on the battlefield, [1] but the droid forces would ultimately retreat, and the Battle of Geonosis proved to be a Republic victory. [6]

Continued conflict [ edit | edit source ]

A homing spider droid during the Battle of Mimban

The homing spider droids were used throughout the Clone Wars. At one point, a large number of B1-series battle droids, [10] which were the main infantry soldiers of the Separatists, [11] and at least three homing spider droids were all located together near dark mountains. [10] During the Battle of Mimban, homing spider droids were among Separatist forces fighting against the Republic. During the fighting, spider droids and other battle droids engaged the Republic’s 501st Legion and Mud Jumpers. Clone Captain “Rex” ordered the 501st to advance and for the Mud Jumpers to back up Jedi General Laan Tik. While Tik instead believed they could take care of themself, the Jedi was struck and killed, making the chain of command fall to [12] Junior Representative [13] Jar Jar Binks, who had been brought to interface with the local Mimbanese. Binks was at Tik’s corpse, telling the body that Tiks had been bombad, as a homing spider droid fired nearby. Rex ordered for a retreat from the current battle. [12]

In 19 BBY, [14] several homing spider droids were fielded on Felucia alongside Armored Assault Tanks during a battle against the forces of Jedi General Aayla Secura. However, the droid forces of the Separatists would be shut down not long after. [15]

Behind the scenes [ edit | edit source ]

The OG-9 homing spider droid first appeared in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. [6] In post-production of that film, the droid was simply referred to as “Commerce Guild droid B.” [16]

Characteristics [ edit | edit source ]

An OG-9 homing spider droid

Like the Republic’s Self-Propelled Heavy Artillery walkers, it was effective against both ground-based and airborne targets and was designed to transport a large and devastating weapon throughout the battlefield. The homing spider droid’s round, armored body contained a volatile reactor. If the core was breached, the reactor violently exploded.

The homing spider could cover wide areas of the battlefield with its four all-terrain legs. Because of its great height and extendable hydraulics, the walker could position its homing laser above its fellow droids at enemy targets or move to higher ground to blast at air vehicles. However, the legs were vulnerable to damage, and if just one hydraulic leg was disabled, the entire vehicle would crash to the ground. This was fairly easy to do because it was a slow vehicle. Despite its weaknesses, the homing spider could walk along the bottom of seabeds, fully submerged in water, as well as scale steep cliffs. [4]

The spider walker’s chief weapon was a laser emplacement mounted atop the droid’s round body. This circular dish fired a precision homing laser that could be maintained until the drone’s internal power supply was finished. This sustained firepower allowed the homing spider to weaken shields, destroy armored vehicles and scythe down troop formations. [1]

An antipersonnel cannon below the walker’s round body could be used for close-quarters combat, while a retractable ion cannon could be added to disable starships or other powerful vehicles. There were also weapon mounts that allowed other armaments to be fixed to the droid. Sensor equipment fitted into the homing spider, enabled it to target and keep track of moving enemy targets. [1]

Homing spider droids were distinguished by a number code alone and did not have developed personalities or long-term memory modules. Instead, they possessed an internal logic processor and military protocols for long-ranged missions, but the droids were often programmed to receive orders directly from a Central Control Computer.

History [ edit | edit source ]

Homing spider droids alongside AATs at the Battle of Felucia.

The homing spider droid was developed by Baktoid Armor Workshop prior to its dissolution by the Trade Federation not long after the Invasion of Naboo. During Baktoid’s final days the company tried to sell many of its designs, and the Commerce Guild purchased several droid models, including the spider walker.

Like the other combat automata deployed by the Commerce Guild, the homing spider droids were originally developed to enforce the Guild’s laws and to ensure that its customers paid their debts, as well as to protect Guild assets. [5]

The homing spider droid first appeared during the Battle of Geonosis in the service of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, where spider droids such as unit 81 fought against the Grand Army of the Republic. During that battle, they provided protection for Trade Federation Lucrehulk-class core ships and annihilated whole contingents of enemy All Terrain Tactical Enforcers, although they were subdued by LAAT/i strikes. [6]

After Geonosis, homing spider droids became common staples of Confederate armies. They were used fairly extensively in the Dark Reaper Crisis early in the war, although they were often destroyed by Jedi-piloted TX-130 Saber-class fighter tanks. [7] A number of droids were used in the defense of the Commerce Guild world of Felucia, [8] and many destroyed units remained there as late as 2 BBY. [9]

Following the execution of the Separatist Council by Darth Sidious’s new apprentice, Darth Vader, all droid units used by the Confederacy were de-activated. [8]
