Project Description: The project development objective is to increase the amount of electricity generated in Afghanistan and to leverage private financing for the country’s energy sector.

The project will support the building and operation of a greenfield 40 MW gas-to-power plant utilizing indigenous gas from the nearby Sheberghan gas fields in northwestern Afghanistan.

Sheberghān, also spelled Shebirghan, town, northern Afghanistan. Sheberghān is situated 80 miles (130 km) west of Mazār-e Sharīf, along the banks of the Safid River. It is surrounded by irrigated agricultural land, and it lies on a main east-west road through northern Afghanistan. Sheberghān was once the capital of an independent Uzbek khanate that was allotted to Afghanistan by the 1873 Anglo-Russian border agreement. Pop. (2006 est.) 66,200.
